Visit to CERN, the world’s largest particle accelerator and one of the most important research facilities in the world. During the maintenance work, I also had the opportunity to visit the tunnel located 100m underground and, above all, the updates of various experiments that are in final assembly, such as the ATLAS experiment with its gigantic detectors. As a hydrogen officer, I was naturally also interested in research findings relating to hydrogen and its production and use (materials, storage, etc). A particularly fascinating example: the highly efficient transport of electricity with superconductor cables (120 kA (!!)) cooled with liquid hydrogen. In this way, electrical energy and hydrogen can be transported simultaneously over long distances – i.e. from the sun-rich MENA countries, for example.
